Have Indian Women won freedom yet?

The Salt Satyagraha was a campaign of non-violent protest against the British salt tax in colonial India which began with the Salt March to Dandi on March 12, 1930. Mahatma Gandhi led the Dandi march from his Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, Gujarat to produce salt without paying the tax, with growing numbers of Indians joining him along the way. When Gandhi broke the salt laws in Dandi at the conclusion of the march on April 6, 1930, it sparked large scale acts of civil disobedience against the British Raj salt laws by millions of Indians. - Wikipedia

The Beginning of the end, the Salt Satyagraha, was the first major event that sparkled the new non violent movement started by Mahatma Gandhi that ushered in Indian Independence.

Today, 52 years hence, the question that goes through my mind is, are we free yet?

Men I guess are free to do what they want. Women, the story is still like sine waves with a huge variation to what they call freedom. Just the other day I was watching a bunch of women create something called the Women Cell for their organization. End of it when I read what they made, I realized, women are yet to be free!

How much ever they are educated, there is still ignorance on what constitutes Women Freedom and what constitutes restriction.

Women I feel are in most cases physically weaker than the Men due to the laws of nature. But at the same time, we should not mistake their humility or their endurance as a sign of weakness! If you come to think of it, a male when he gets angry, reacts violently without any thought and ends up destroying, even if it means the result is self destruction. Our wars are a perfect example of the same.

Women on the other hand have always shown us that survival is all about
endurance. Whether it is physical hardship, mental harassment or subjugation to male dominance, women are programmed to ensure the survival of the human kind and hence they silently suffer man's savageness. Just like our mother earth which we keep destroying for our so called gains every moment, these women silently bear our onslaught and think their lives are destined for this..

I just felt I had to write this down because I recently was going through the preamble and guidelines of the women cell and I realized that things have yet to change in the mindset on what constitutes a individual's freedom. Due to their vulnerability of physical injury and mental scars, women are always protected from man and his hormone induced lust. And this scar remains in so many women that they think they do a good thing by restricting the lives of other women who could fall in this trap. End result, the women does not experience the life she is supposed to live, instead its restricted to what others think is good for her...

And to highlight this, any criminal incident where a girl is a victim, its highlighted by news channel so much that the protective restrictive
mechanisms become stronger and stronger on women. The end result is women are caged. Every day thousands of men die unknown deaths, yet no one is interested on the reasons.

But if a girl is murdered, or raped, it becomes the headline for days. Women instead of being empowered and taught things like self defense or other solutions like moving in groups etc, they are instead forced to cut short their life outside to be limited within daytimes. Come evening, they should be safely under lock and key at home away from hooligans!

Is this what is called freedom? If so I am sad for the Indian women who fought a vain battle to free India, because when they did free India, they forgot to teach many a mother, sister and wife, that freedom is not about locking oneself up at home, but facing the world in a safer way, even if she does not have a man escorting her around. Every moment, the women should have equal chances to prove why they are equal to the men in the various other aspects that constitute life on earth.

If I were to have to live in fear within my house after eight pm in the
evening, I guess I too would revolt and go for my own satyagraha against this injustice just like we once did with our British Rulers..

But alas, the women themselves have to open their eyes to see, understand and do what they feel is right rather than cut their own freedoms because they think this freedom can be misused...There is a long long way for Indian Women to be free from their psyche..

Where the mind is without

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken upinto fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
